Caribbean Counsel Legal Research

Most of what is written about Dominican law for foreign readers is opinion without sources. This program exists to publish the sources: what Dominican courts have actually decided, read from the decisions themselves, so that anyone weighing a purchase, a claim or a dispute can see the record before forming a view.

Methodology

The firm maintains a corpus of more than 3,000 decisions from the Dominican courts where it litigates, centered on the civil courts of La Altagracia province and the eastern region. Individual studies draw on this corpus and, where a question requires it, on the wider body of published Dominican decisions.

One rule governs every figure we publish: it is read from the operative part of the decision, the section that states what the court actually ordered, not from summaries or index fields, which often reflect what a party asked for rather than what was awarded. Each published figure carries its court, date and decision number, so the citation can be checked. Party names are omitted where appropriate; the citations are public.

Each study states its own period and sample. The datasets are samples of the decisions reviewed, not claims of national completeness, and past decisions do not predict the outcome of any individual case. Each piece states its publication date.

Published research
Why the firm publishes this

The research is not a marketing exercise; it is how the firm works. Before advising on a dispute, a purchase or an estate, we look at how the courts here have treated the same question. Publishing part of that record serves readers who will never become clients, and it keeps the firm honest.

If your situation touches one of these questions and you want it read against the record, you can write to info@caribbeancounseldr.com. The first case review is free.
